Five years ago on October 30, 2012, I published my first blog post. It’s crazy to think that I have been sharing my stories for the past FIVE years! I had no expectations when I started my blog. I sort of hoped that Medtronic would want to be a sponsor and send me free supplies (never happened) but mainly I was looking for a way to feel less alone after having lived with diabetes for almost 20 years (at the time).
I spent the first 20 years of my life pretending that my diabetes didn’t exist. I wouldn’t talk about my diabetes. The most I would say about it was when someone would ask if I was wearing a pager. I would say no, it’s my insulin pump because I have diabetes and then I would move on. I always wanted to blend in with the crowd and not bring attention to myself or my diabetes.
Now, five years later, I have shared 375 blog posts! I’ve documented my struggles as I started a Couch to 5K program, which ultimately led to running TWO half marathons! I shared the ups and downs of a diabetic pregnancy-twice! I’ve shared recipes, participated in DBlogWeek and DayOfDiabetes, and vented about my insurance frustrations. Sometimes, I have worried that I might be oversharing but other times I hope that sharing my story might help someone.
Not only have I shared a lot, but I’ve found a ton of resources, both online and in person thanks to blogging. As a result, I have people I can turn to and it’s helped making living with diabetes a little bit better.
I don’t know what the next five years will look like for me. I hope to still be blogging, although shouldn’t there be a cure in the next five years?!
Thank you to all my readers for the support over the last five years! I truly appreciate it!
Hope everyone has a happy and safe Halloween. Here are my two cutie pies all ready for tomorrow night!
*I wrote this a week ago, but we were at Disney and I didn’t get a chance to post so it’s a week late.
