The Freedom Broker – Book Review

Posted on

If you know me or have been following my blog for a while, you know that I love to read.  So when I was contacted about reading a new book, where the main character is a Type 1 diabetic, I had to jump at the chance to read and review it.  The Freedom Broker is K.J. Howe’s debut novel and it is fast paced with lots of action and suspense.

The Freedom Broker is the story of Thea Paris, a kidnap negotiator, who has survivor’s guilt after her brother was kidnapped when he was 12 years old. He returned after 9 months but the whole family was deeply impacted.  Twenty years after her brother’s abduction, her father, who is an oil tycoon, is kidnapped and Thea is on a mission to find him.

Overall, I thought this book was very entertaining.  I am not a huge action book fan so I was a little overwhelmed at first when it gets right into the action but once I got into the groove of the book, I loved it.  So much happens throughout the book that it was a very entertaining and quick read and I was constantly wondering what was next.

On the diabetes front, it was so exciting to see a Type 1 diabetic featured as the main character.  The author’s grandfather had Type 1 diabetes so he was the inspiration for the character.   Howe was also a medical writer before getting into writing thrillers.  I thought the author did do a good job of handling Thea’s diabetes although there was one scene that kind of bugged me.  In this scene, there is a celebration and it is mentioned that they didn’t have cake because they knew that Thea couldn’t have it.  Type 1 diabetics can definitely have cake and if I was celebrating something, I would want cake.  Other than that, I loved the way it was handled.  There was mention of her Dexcom and needing insulin and carrying around supplies, all things that we have to deal with.  It was so exciting to read about a person with Type 1 diabetes and hopefully there will be more installments to the book/series where they can go into more detail about it.

While it took a little bit for me to get into all the action, once I was in, I was hooked.  This was a fun read and I couldn’t help but think that this would make a great action film.  I got the feeling that she is hoping to make this into a series like the Bourne series and if that’s the case, I look forward to reading more of her books!

As a random note – I perused her website, which was a perfect compliment to her book, and she mentioned that she loves book clubs and would even Skype with your book club!  I’m tempted to look into this for my book club! How cool.

*I was given a free copy of this book to review but this post is entirely my own opinion.  Thanks!
