I am pretty new to the DOC (Diabetes Online Community). I started my blog back at the end of October 2012 (but didn’t publish until January 2013). If you have read my first post, you know that I started writing this blog to connect with others because I have always felt pretty alone with the disease. So far, I’ve been using this blog as more of a journal, sharing my thoughts and feelings about daily life with diabetes but I’m hoping to get more involved with the DOC and I have recently learned about the Diabetes Social Media Advocacy.
The Diabetes Social Media Advocacy has a monthly “blog carnival” and for April they want to know:
Does the sunshine and warmth of Spring urge you to change up your exercise routine? If you don’t have an exercise routine, does it inspire you to start exercising? And if it’s not Spring in your corner of the world, what season are you heading into and how does it impact your fitness routine?
My answer to this is quite different than it would have been last year. I have never had an exercise routine. Most of my life I have been pretty lazy. Sure, I’ll go out and play softball once a week or ride my bike that one time but I have never had an exercise routine. Until this year. My current exercise routine has been to run three times a week and try and get to the gym to lift weights (which so far I have only managed to do once). I plan to continue this routine, but I will say that now that it’s getting warmer out I do hope to ride my bike more. My husband bought me a shiny new bike for my birthday last year. We were living in Northern Virginia and it was hard to get outside and ride my bike around my townhouse. Sure, I could take my bike to the beautiful GW Parkway but that required a lot more effort than just opening the garage door and going. We moved last August to suburbia and now I can’t use the busy streets as an excuse since I have a great neighborhood to ride though.
Living in Richmond, VA though, we tend to not really get a “spring”. We had winter like conditions with temperatures in the 40’s one week then the following week it climbed up to 90! Pretty ridiculous. Spring is trying to make it’s presence known though because we had an amazing weekend of sun and 60’s (and all the flowers and leaves are popping up!) this past weekend but unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get a bike ride in. I hope as the next few weeks progress I will find time to start using the bike more (or at all I should really say). When I started running back in November it took me quite a while to get my blood sugars under control for a run. I have no idea how biking will affect my blood sugar since I have never really ridden my bike much so it will be another interesting journey to see how riding a bike for a longer distance will affect my blood sugar. It’s always a journey with Type 1 Diabetes :-P.
